The Level 3 Media Delivery Vision

The story of how and why Level 3 entered the CDN business is only partially known. When we entered the CDN business two years ago, we assumed the coming explosion in rich media content delivered over the Internet would require a strategic approach to CDN that was different from that of the existing CDN network providers. We also anticipated that the unique demands of rich media content delivery would be uniquely served by the combination of Level 3’s existing assets and a CDN network.
This realization spurred Level 3 to purchase one of the world’s first Content Delivery Networks built back in the mid-‘90s by a company called Sandpiper Networks. This part of our story is well known, but there’s more to the story that I’d like to share with you.

Smooth Streaming – Making HD Web Video a Reality

In March 2009, Microsoft released Smooth Streaming, an extension to Internet Information Services (IIS) Media Services that enables adaptive streaming of media to Silverlight™ clients over HTTP.

The Level 3 CDN averages over one trillion requests for content per month. That’s equivalent to 700 requests from each of the world’s estimated 1.5 billion Internet users.

In the last six months, monthly data delivered by Level 3 increased by almost 75%. In the most recent month, over 550 petabytes of content were delivered, enough to fill over 40 million 100 gigabyte disk drives.

Growth in video content has been particularly strong. In the last six months, the amount of content delivered for our primary video-centric customers increased by over 100%.

Level 3’s Andrew Swart is named a 2009 Streaming Media All-Star.
Each year, Streaming Media honors the most influential and innovative individuals in the world of online video by naming them to their annual list of Streaming Media All-Stars. In April of 2009, Level 3’s Vice President of Content Markets, Andrew Swart, who helped develop the first content delivery network in 1996, was named to this list. Swart is one of 17 All-Stars being recognized for evangelizing the value of streaming media and helping to realize its vast potential.
